Track Atlas is a map of public running tracks. This policy explains exactly what the site stores, what it sends to other companies, and what control you have. It is written to be read rather than to cover every eventuality. The terms of use cover sponsoring a country, refunds, and what you contribute.
Saved tracks, a random identifier used to recognise your own comments, the two-letter code for the country the map should open on, and whether you have dismissed the notice shown on arrival are stored in your browser's local storage. They are not accounts. Clearing your browser data deletes them permanently, and there is no way for us to recover them.
The site sets no advertising or tracking cookies.
Only when you choose to submit something:
Do not put personal information into a comment. Comments are visible to everyone and you should treat them as permanently public.
The track data behind the map comes from OpenStreetMap and is public. The site's own source code is not published.
Comments are never published. They stay on this site's server. They are not released as a downloadable dataset, not sold, and not handed to anyone else.
Corrections are treated differently, and deliberately so. If you report a closed track, suggest a better name, or add a missing one, that is a factual fix to a public map, and we may build it into the map data itself, which is published under an open licence. Only the correction travels, never your display name, your comment text, or anything identifying you.
If ownership of the site ever changes, or it shuts down, comments will be deleted rather than transferred or published.
If you adopt a country, the payment is processed by Stripe on their own checkout page. Card numbers are never sent to this site and we never see or store them. Stripe tells us only that a payment succeeded, and for how much.
We store the display name and short message you choose to show on the adopters list, the amount, and the date. Leave the name blank to appear as Anonymous. If you would rather not be listed at all after paying, email us and we will remove the entry.
Using the map necessarily sends requests to these services, each with its own policy:
We do not sell or share your information, and there is no advertising or analytics on this site.
Your country, worked out automatically. When the map loads it asks our server which country you are in, so that a visitor in a country we have not mapped yet opens on their own part of the world instead of on the United States. Cloudflare works this out from your IP address as the request arrives and tells us the two-letter country code, which is all we ask for and all we receive. We never store or log the IP address itself, and the country is not saved on our server or attached to anything you submit. It is remembered only in your own browser so the map opens in the right place next time. This happens without asking you, because a country code is not precise enough to identify anyone. Clearing your browser data removes it.
Your precise position, only if you ask. If you use the locate button, your browser asks your permission first and the result is used only to move the map. Your position is never transmitted or stored.
Comments and submissions are kept until they are no longer useful for maintaining the map. You can delete your own comments from the comment panel on any track. To have something else removed, get in touch and say which comment or submission you mean.
This site is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be noted on the map itself.
